Kent & Sussex based Mole Removal Clinic

Mole removal can be in order to check for cancer or to remove a symptomatic lesion that is annoying or unsightly.

It is important to be vigilant for worrying signs in skin lesions that could indicate a skin cancer, any new or changing lesion is worth getting checked out.

Varying colours or shape changes and an asymmetry may be suspicious features. Growth, bleeding, crusting, itching or pain may be pointers to a problem lesion.

When a patient is concerned about a lesion it is necessary to be able to either reassure or help in a timely way. The outlook is frequently better when skin cancer is picked up early.

It is possible to remove most lesions using local anaesthetic. The patient is put at ease and the nurses and myself guide them through the process.

Initially anxious patients often find the procedures that I do more comfortable than they were expecting and often find it a surprisingly good experience.

I use plastic surgery techniques for a good cosmetic outcome.

I give my patients a wound care advice sheet – this advises when the stitches need to be removed and how to look after the area in the initial healing period. We will talk about keeping the wound as tension free as possible which may involve some reduced activity.

Once the wound has healed over and the scar is maturing, it is important to keep the area moisturised and to protect it from the sun. There is some evidence suggesting that using silicone gel may prevent problematic scarring.

Most skin cancer is thought to be caused by sun damage and therefore can be prevented. People with pale skin who burn easily are vulnerable. Sunbed use can increase risk.

Use of protective clothing, hats and sunglasses and a high factor sun cream is recommended. It is best to keep out of the sun in the middle of the day when it is at it’s hottest. Babies and children need to be protected as they are more vulnerable to sun damage that can cause skin cancers later in life.

It may be worth considering a vitamin D supplement/ checking blood levels of Vitamin D because avoiding skin exposure to the sun can reduce levels.
